Hair toppers for thinning hair

A topper is a partial piece. It covers the area that needs it most, usually the crown or the part line, and blends into the hair that is still there. It suits thinning rather than total loss: the sides and back need enough hair of their own for the topper to blend into.

Thinning at the part A wider part or more scalp showing through the top, where the rest of the hair is still worth keeping.
Thinning through the crown Diffuse loss across the crown, where a topper adds coverage without hiding your own hair.
Volume loss Hormonal change or general thinning, where the goal is density on top rather than full coverage.
BeforeA woman’s diffuse crown thinning before a hair topper was fitted
AfterThe same crown after a custom hair topper was fitted and blended
A topper, not a full systemDiffuse thinning through the crown and part line in a woman, with the sides and back thinning as well. The topper covers the area that needs it most and blends into the hair that is still there.

Wigs for hair loss

A wig gives full coverage where a topper cannot: more advanced loss, total loss, or a scalp that needs to be left alone. It goes on and comes off, so nothing is bonded to the skin.

Chemotherapy A complimentary chemo cut takes your own hair down to a quarter inch all over before the fallout starts, so there is far less loose hair everywhere once it does. A wig can be chosen and fitted before or during treatment.
Alopecia totalis and universalis Total loss of the hair on the scalp, or across the whole body, where a wig is full coverage from day one.
Frontal fibrosing alopecia Scarring loss along the hairline, where the follicle cannot recover and coverage is the honest answer.

A wig made from your own hair

Some manufacturers make a cap-style wig, worn under a ball cap, from your own hair. Before a chemo cut, your hair can be prepared here according to the manufacturer’s instructions. You place the order and ship the hair to the manufacturer yourself.

How the wig and topper consultation works

First

Sample pieces

You try sample pieces at the consultation to find the cap, length, density and color that suit your face, your hair and how you actually live.

Then

Ordering

Your wig or topper is ordered in for you, since nothing is sold from stock. Nothing is ordered until the choice is right.

Then

Fitting and cut

When the piece arrives, it is fitted and cut in the studio so it sits and blends the way it should.

If you want to know what is causing the loss before you choose coverage, start with a hair loss analysis. The scalp under a wig or topper still needs looking after.

Wig, topper or hair replacement?

  • Topper A partial piece for thinning at the crown or part, clipped into the hair you still have and taken off when you want.
  • Wig Full coverage you put on and take off, for advanced or total loss, chemotherapy, or a scalp that needs a rest.
  • Hair replacement system A system bonded to the scalp and worn continuously between maintenance visits. See non-surgical hair replacement.
  • CRLab CNC prosthetic Custom-made from a 3D scan of your scalp, for areas where hair will not grow back. See how a CRLab CNC system is made.

Questions about wigs and toppers

Do you keep wigs and toppers in stock? No. Nothing is sold from stock. Any wig or topper can be ordered in for you, and the consultation uses sample pieces to find the right one before anything is ordered.
How long does a wig or topper take to arrive? It depends on the piece. Delivery typically takes 10 to 14 days. A custom order typically takes about four months, sometimes longer, depending on sourcing and availability.
Do you work with chemotherapy patients? Yes. The chemo cut is complimentary: your own hair is taken down to a quarter inch all over to cut down on loose hair once the fallout begins. Your hair can also be prepared for a manufacturer that makes cap-style wigs from your own hair, which you order and ship yourself.
Can I use an HSA or FSA for a wig? Sometimes. IRS Publication 502 counts a wig as a medical expense when it is bought on a doctor’s advice for the mental health of a patient who has lost all of their hair from disease. Whether your HSA, FSA or insurance covers a particular piece depends on your plan, so check with your plan administrator before you order.
