Why digestion and absorption come first

Food has to be broken down and absorbed before the body can use it. Most of that work happens in the small intestine, where nutrients pass into the blood and on to the cells. What is not absorbed passes through. A good diet, or a good supplement, only helps as far as your body can digest and absorb it.

DigestionDigestive enzymes break proteins, carbohydrates and fats down into molecules small enough to use.
AbsorptionThose molecules then have to cross the gut wall into the bloodstream to reach the rest of the body.
UseOnly then can the nutrients do anything, including for the scalp and the hair that grows from it.

It is also why nutrition coaching here is anchored to the scalp findings.

Not all supplements are created equal

Two bottles with the same name on the label can be made very differently. What the ingredients come from, what else is in the capsule, and whether the body can actually absorb it all vary from one brand to the next.

How Optimal Health Systems describes its formulas

Who owns the supplement brands on the shelf

Many of the best-known supplement brands are owned by large pharmaceutical, consumer health or food companies, and the name on the bottle does not always tell you who that is. These are the companies’ own published records.

  • CentrumA Haleon brand. Haleon’s own history lists Centrum among the brands of a joint venture formed with Pfizer in 2019, which ended in 2022 when Haleon listed as an independent company. Haleon brands and history.
  • One A DayDescribed by Bayer as “the multivitamin and supplement brand by Bayer.” Bayer.
  • Nature’s Bounty, Solgar, Osteo Bi-Flex and Puritan’s PrideAcquired by Nestlé and folded into Nestlé Health Science, announced April 30, 2021. Nestlé press release.
  • Garden of Life and Pure EncapsulationsAcquired by Nestlé with Atrium Innovations, announced December 5, 2017. Nestlé press release.

Ownership alone does not tell you how a product is made. It is one more reason to read the label and ask what is in it.
